Check if there's a new path. So its definetly not a problem with the tracks. The "Play"/"Stop" button does not change between the two stations. Set the schedule to 1 "pickup" station and 1 "dropoff" station and name all the dropoff stations the same. You are correct, automatic trains will only allow inserters to access them when they reach their target station to prevent access at signals or even other stations not in their list (say they route through the wrong station, but stop at signal just after the station).
